Edmund Naumann

Edmund Naumann was born about 1850 in Germany.

Education

Graduate of Munchen University. Taught geology at Tokyo University.

Career

After a detailed study of Japan minerals he wrote many theses, including studies on the eruption of Oshima Island, chalk fossils in Hokkaido and the formation of the Japanese islands.

Achievements

Under his instructions and guidance the Ministry of Home Affairs established the Imperial Institute of Geology of which he became chief expert. In this capacity he ranged all over Japan and drew up the first geological map of Japan.
