Linfield, Edmund Harold was born on July 15, 1965 in Rustington, West Sussex, England. Son of Harold John and Cecily Mary Linfield.

Postdoctoral research associate University Cambridge, England, 1991—1997, assistant director research, 1997—2004. Fellow Gonville and Caius College, 1997—2004. Chair terahertz electronics University Leeds, England, since 2004.


  • Achievements include joint demonstration of the first working terahertz quantum cascade laser. Detailed research in terahertz spectroscopic studies of materials of relevance to the pharmaceutical and security sectors. Development of a technique, based on focused ion beam lithography, for achieving independent contacts to two, close, parallel conducting layers.

    First to demonstrate of terahertz techniques for imaging basal cell carcinomas and dental tissue.
