Spent boyhood on farm. Taught in public schools and Bellefonte Academy. Graduate Pennsylvania College, Gettysburg, 1863.

Served in army during Civil War.

Studied theology at Gettysburg and at Tübingen and Erlangen, Germany. Doctor of Divinity, Franklin and Marshall College, 1876.

Doctor of Laws, Wittenberg College, 1901. Admitted to Lutheran ministry in 1865.

Career

Served churches in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and in Baltimore. Professor church history and New Testament exegesis, Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, since 1874. Member board of managers Evangelical Alliance of the United States.

Member American History Society, Society of Biblical Literature and Exegesis.

Chairman of Joint Committee to prepare a Common Book of Worship for all Lutherans. Elected president Lutheran General Synod, 1903.

Editorially connected with Lutheran Quarterly and Lutheran World. Author: Lutherans in America, 1889.
