This volume deals with the modern fate of the traditional conception of Jews as a covenanted people chosen to receive the Law, whose ultimate purpose is contributing to the universal salvation of mankind. The author shows how, under the influence of liberalism, rationalism, relativism, and other Enlightenment ideologies, this idea was distorted, denied, inverted, yet never entirely obliterated. In his discussions of modern Jewish thinkers and writers and the ideological and political struggles of Zionism and the state of Israel against enemies from without and from within, Alexander shows that the ancient idea of covenant is still alive today, if only in the assumption that Jewish life can lead somewhere so long as Jews remember that it began somewhere.

Edward Alexander was born on December 28, 1936, in Brooklyn, New York, United States. He was the son of Harry and Sadie Alexander.
Edward Alexandr grew up in the Brownsville section where he attended a Hebrew school. Alexander earned a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College in 1953. He then attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Master of Arts in 1959, and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1963.
Edward Alexandr taught English at the University of Washington from 1960-2004 and was the first chairman of UW's Jewish Studies Program. He was a visiting professor at Tufts, Hebrew University, Tel-Aviv University, and Memphis State University.
During his prolific teaching career in Seattle and Israel, Edward Alexander mentored numerous young scholars, published books on Victorian literature, Jewish history and culture, and the state of Israel, and wrote countless essays, editorials, and book reviews.
In 1974, Edward Alexander co-founded the Jewish Studies Department at the University of Washington.

Edward Alexander refused to accept the conventional wisdom about Israel’s "malfeasance." His courageous defense of the world’s only Jewish state, especially against its self-promoting academic and "intellectual" enemies, was eviscerating and unyielding. His voice of wisdom, Jewish passion, and love for Israel will remain his legacy.
His love of writing came early, as a sportswriter for Samuel J. Tilden High School. He was a lifelong baseball fan, and Jackie Robinson was his childhood hero.
Edward Alexandr was an influential Jewish thinker not only locally but worldwide, known for his fierce sense of justice, and his willingness to take unpopular stands.
Physical Characteristics: Alexander had several cancer surgeries in 2009-2010.
