Allcard was educated at Eton College.
In 1949 he crossed the Atlantic ocean single-handed, in 81 days. He was the first man in history to sail the Atlantinc solo in both directions. In 1951, leaving the Azores, he found a 23-year-old female stowaway on his yawl, Temptress.
He appeared as a "castaway" on the British Broadcasting Corporation Radio programme Desert Island Discs on 26 July 1955.
Allcard later moved to Malta. In October 2014 he celebrated his 100th birthday at his home in Louisiana Massana, Andorra.
