Superintendent for California and Nevada Indian affairs, 1852-1856.
Led railroad survey in Southern California and Utah, 1853. Appointed by President Buchanan to lead surveying expedition for road from Fort Defiance (New Mexico) to Colorado River, 1857.
Active in politics as Republican after 1856. Served as surveyor general of California and Nevada, 1861-1865.
Retired to ranch near Bakersfield, California, 1865, lived half of each year in Washington.
Appointed United States minister to Austria-Hungary (appointed by President Grant), 1876-1877.
