Studied at Bath Grammar School.
Served in Crimea with OSth Light Infantry, 1854-1855 (medal and clasp for Sebastopol, and Turkish inedal). Passed competitive examination for Staff College, 1861, but retired from service in October of that year. Came to Queensland; managed the Cabuthese Cotton Company.
Then joined the Public Service of Queensland, having amongst other positions filled that of Under-Secretary Public Lands, member of Land Boards, and AuditorGeneral for twelve years. Retired from the Public Service of Queensland, 1901. He was a trustee of Agricultural Bank since 1902.
