Edward F. Maher was born in 1865 in Maryland, United States.
He was educated in architecture at "M. I.T.," and after supplementing his early training during an extended visit in Europe.
He began work with the Boston firm of Fehmer & Page. Later in the position of head draftsman he designed the Worthington Building on State Street, and was given charge of other works of the firm.
In 1907 Mr. Maher established his own office in Boston, and during his career designed many suburban homes in New England, several parish churches and rectories, also was frequently employed to plan church additions or remodel interiors. Probably the most noted example of his ecclesiastical work was the Church and Rectory of St. Francis of Assisi at Medford, Mass., completed about 1914. While his practice was small compared to that of larger offices in Boston, Mr. Maher's work was distinguished by a meticulous refinement of detail and composition, attributed to the skill and versatility of the man known for many years as "Dean of Boston draftsmen."
