From 1970 to 1984 Pavel Gurevich studied mass ideological processes in the western society. He put forward the idea that the social mythology is a phenomenon generated by people’s entering historic scene and found out that propaganda replaces ideology, which can reveal itself in various images. In the second half of the 80's, his works are mainly devoted to the study of the mysticism phenomenon, which possesses more number of signs, so that it helps to determine the mystical experience peculiar to all religions and to separate it from the scientific one.
In the 90's, P. Gurevich worked on the semiotic nature of culture consideration and its symbolic forms. He developed the question of the types of anthropological teachings, of human subjectivity, of the personalistic tradition and of the modes of human existence.
In his work on social psychology, P. Gurevich explored the relationship between philosophical and psychological knowledge dealt with the psychology of groups and crowds, and the phenomenon of destructiveness. He contributed to the development of the Reichian and Jungian typology. In the book "Clinical Psychology", he demonstrated that schizophrenia, manic-depressive psychosis and involuntary depression are not caused by physical injuries.
In the post-Soviet period Gurevich attempted to reconstruct the history of philosophical anthropology. This idea was reflected in the monograph "Philosophical interpretation of man". Here the development of the philosophical comprehension of human is traced including the period from mythology to postmodern. Particular attention is paid to the image of a human in Russian philosophy. P. Gurevich showed the significance of the anthropological doctrine of a human presented by N. A. Berdyaev. At the same time, he outlines the emergence and expansion of misanthropology. In the monograph "The Philosophical Interpretation of Man" (2013), he analyses the spectrum of anthropological teachings, highlighting social, cultural, political, historical, religious and psychoanalytic anthropology. P. Gurevich unravels the phenomenon of human deantropologization as an apophatic project of a human. In the monograph "Personality Psychoanalysis", the nature of human passions and the phenomenon of transcendence are revealed. The problems of psychoanalytic anthropology were reflected in the two-volume study "Psychoanalysis" (2013). Gurevich also paid attention to the study of human passions such as love, fear, ambitiousness, greed, etc.
