In the 1930s his family moved to Nottingham, where he attended the Mundella Grammar School from 1934 to 1939. From 1949 to 1952 he attended Royal College of Art, where his teachers were Ruskin Spear, Carel Weight and John Minton.
London 1954-1974; Head of Fine Art Department, Norwich School of Art since 1964; Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools 1985; contribution to numerous group exhibitions including Venice Biennale 1956, Pittsburgh Institute 1958, English Landscape Tradition in the 20th Century 1969, 25 Years of British Painting 1977, The Forgotten Fifties 1984; paintings in Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Canada and many other public and private collections; Gulbenkian Foundation Scholarship 1962.His fellow students included Derrick Greaves and Jack Smith. Middleditch associated early on with the so-called "Kitchen Sink" school of realist painters in the 1950s. He held teaching posts at Chelsea School of Art, Street Martins School of Art, and Norwich School of Art (where he became head of fine art).
Middleditch exhibited widely and is represented in major and regional collections in United Kingdom, United States, Canada, and Australia.
He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1973, later as Keeper of the Royal Academy (in charge of the schools).
Married Jean K. Whitehouse in 1947.
