Edward West was born in 1949 in New York City, United States.
West earned a BA in Art History from Lake Forest College, Lake Forest, Illinois (1971), and an MFA in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology, New York (1973) .
He has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1973, and in 1977-79 served as chairman of the Photography Department as well as assistant professor. In 1973 he taught both at Columbia College in Chicago and at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. West received the Rockford Art Association's Radius Award in 1974, National Teaching Fellowships in 1974 and 1973 and the Ellington Award for Scholarship in 1972.
