Sanders received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College in 1961. The same year he earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Michigan.
Sanders began his career as an assistant research professor at the University of Pitt in 1969. Four years later he took a position of a project leader of chemical research at Philip Morris USA. Then in 1979, Edward became a manager research and a principle scientist in 1985 at the same company. Also he served as a vice-director of research at Fabriques de Tabac Teunies from 1992 to 1994.
Also in 1994, Sanders became a principal scientist at Philip Morris International. In 1998, he was appointed a director of worldwide scientific affairs at that company. Since 2001 Edward has been a research fellow of development and engineering at Philip Morris International.
