WAKEFIELD, Edward Gibbon was born in 1796 in London, England.
Colonisation theorist, whose scheme was based on the sale not grant of land to colonists, both to ensure that the purchasers cultivated it properly and also to provide funds for the development of the colonisation process. He also argued for self-government once the colony was sufficiently large. The colony of South. Australia was organised according to his principles, and proved very successful.
He also advised Lord Durham on his Report on the Affairs of British North America which set Canada on the course towards selfgovernment, and gave similar advice on the colonisation of New Zealand.
His defence of colonisation, based on the notion that Britain was suffering from an excess of both capital and labour, influenced the later classical economists, such as J. South. Mill, in taking a more sceptical attitude towards Say’s law and the so-called impossibility of general gluts.
