CANNAN, Edwin was born in 1861. Son of D. A. Cannan.
Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts University Oxford, 1884,1887. Honorary Doctor of Laws University Glasgow. Honorary LittD University Manchester.
His edition of Smith’s Wealth of Nations (1904) is perhaps his chief monument because of the outstanding quality of the introduction and explanatory notes. However, his work as a teacher at London School of Economies and Political Science, London, United Kingdom, where he inspired several generations of students, is another source of his reputation. His teaching was not particularly modern in terms of tools and techniques, but it was based on a deep knowledge of the great writers in the subject which also informs many of his books, including his one undisputed masterpiece, A History of the Theories of Production and Distribution.
The outspoken and commonsensical style of his various works make them still readable and useful. Lector, Professor of Economics, London School of Economies and Political Science, London, United Kingdom, 1895-1926.
