Excerpt from Money: Its Connexion With Rising and Falling Prices This little work was projected as a supplementary chapter to the author's Wealth. Written in August and September, 1918, it grew larger than he expected, and now in April, 1920, it seems desirable to add two sections (6 and 7) on the causes of the rise of prices in the last six years. Excerpt from A History of the Theories of Production and Distribution in English Political Economy: From 1776 to 1848 But while thus confining the alterations within the narrowest possible limits, I have not thought myself precluded from adding at the end of the last chapter two entirely new sections, in which I have attempted to indicate the relation of the theories of to-day to those of the period under review, and to show that the old theories have been replaced by others stronger fi'om a scientific point of view, and equally suitable for the practical needs of their own time. ( Elementary Political Economy was Cannan's first book, w...)
Elementary Political Economy was Cannan's first book, which went through three editions, the 1903 edition being the last Cannan worked on. It is divided into three parts, General Material Welfare, Individual Welfare under Private Property and The Promotion of Public Welfare by the State. In this book Cannan defines the purpose of political economy and illustrates the 'elementary' parts of political economy. Influenced by the historical approach to political economy, Cannan was most concerned with the material welfare of individual human beings. In The History of Local Rates in Britain Cannan displays a deep understanding of local government and its history.

(This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

CANNAN, Edwin was born in 1861. Son of D. A. Cannan.
Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts University Oxford, 1884,1887. Honorary Doctor of Laws University Glasgow. Honorary Doctor of Letters University Manchester.
His edition of Smith’s Wealth of Nations (1904) is perhaps his chief monument because of the outstanding quality of the introduction and explanatory notes. However, his work as a teacher at London School of Economies and Political Science, London, United Kingdom, where he inspired several generations of students, is another source of his reputation. His teaching was not particularly modern in terms of tools and techniques, but it was based on a deep knowledge of the great writers in the subject which also informs many of his books, including his one undisputed masterpiece, A History of the Theories of Production and Distribution.
The outspoken and commonsensical style of his various works make them still readable and useful.
Lector, Professor of Economics, London School of Economies and Political Science, London, United Kingdom, 1895-1926.

During that time, particularly during his long stretch as chairman after 1907, Edwin Cannan shepherded the London School of Economics away from its roots in Fabian socialism into tentative Marshallianism. Though Cannan, in his early years as an economist, was a critic of classical economics and an ally of interventionists, he moved sharply to the side of classical liberalism in the early 20th century.
Spouse 1907, Margaret M., c.daughter of late Deputy Surgeon- General David Cullen, Cheltenham.
