At the tender age of fourteen, Edwin Hale Lincoln longed to experience the struggle and hardship of the Civil War firsthand. Too young to enlist, however, his father granted permission for Lincoln to join the Fifth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry as a drummer boy under the care of his cousin Jarius Lincoln.

Edwin was born in 1848, in Westminster, Massachusetts, United States.
Edwin took up photography in 1877, and in 1883 he went to the Berkshires of New England, where he photographed the grounds and interiors of many of its great estates. Also, he began to photograph wildflowers, which he continued to do from 1893.
Best known for his flower images, "Lincoln also photographed local Berkshire landmarks, special events, and landscapes. For his nature studies he used a number of cameras, none using a negative smaller than 8 x 1 0 inches. He printed his work on platinum paper only. Because of the long exposures needed, he often carried his flower subjects, their roots wrapped in moss, back to his studio. There, by natural light, he could compose them and photograph them unhindered by breezes" (William F. Robmson, A Certain Slant of Light).
