Hartshorn, Edwin Simpson was born on November 13, 1874 in Troy, New York, United States. Son of Edwin Alonzo and Sarah Loretta (Hovey) Hartshorn.

Education

Student Hudson River Institute, Claverack, New York, 1889-1893. Honor graduated from Army School of the Line, 1913. Graduated from Army Staff College, 1914, Field Artillery School, 1922, Army War College, 1923.

Career

Served in Spanish-American War as First lieutenant 201st New York Vol. Infantry, later captain, 1898-1899. In Philippine Insurrection as First lieutenant 27th United States Infantry, 1899-1901.

Entered regular United States Army as Second lieutenant infantry, February 2, 1901. Advanced through grades to brig, general, December 26, 1935. Served in Pulajan Insurrection, 1904.

Lieutenant colonel and colonel General Staff, World War I. On War Department General Staff, 1917-1921, 1924-1928, chief of staff, 9th Corps Area, 1930-1934. Executive for Reserve Affairs, War Department, 1935-1938.

Retired from active service, November 30, 1938.
