Tillotson was born on February 28, 1884 in Farmington, Connecticut, United States; the son of Edwin Ward Tillotson and Mary Lewis (Root) Tillotson.
Tillotson received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1906 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1909 from Yale University.
Tillotson began his career as a research fellow of the department of industrial research at the University of Kansas in 1909. Four years later he took a position of an assistant director at Mellon Institute of Industrial Research of the University of Pittsburgh. Since 1951 Edwin has been a director of research at the same institute.
Tillotson was a member of American Chemical Society and American Ceramic Society.
On July 24, 1913 Edwin Tillotson married Lida Charles LeSuer. They have 2 children.
