Guba was born on March 1, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois, United States; the son of Oswald and Rosina (Schell) Guba.
Guba attended private Lutheran elementary, junior high and high schools in Chicago. In 1947, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Valparaiso University. Three years later Egon was given a Master of Arts degree from the University of Kansas. Then in 1952, he received a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.
Guba was deployed to the 381st Combat Engineers Battalion in the United States Army during World War II. He served building and rebuilding bridges for United States troops, blowing up enemy gun emplacements and bunkers, disarming booby traps left behind after D-Day and was part of the team which blew up the Bremerhaven wolf pens.
In 1947, Egon began his career as an instructor of mathematics and physics at Valparaiso University, where he worked until 1948. In 1951, he was appointed a research associate at the University of Chicago. Then in 1953, Guba became an instructor at the same university. Also he served as an assistant professor of education at the University of Chicago from 1956 to 1957. In 1957, Egon took a position of an associate professor of education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he worked until 1958. The same years he was a research associate at Community Studies, Inc.
Egon worked as a research associate, associate professor and professor of bureau of educational research and services at Ohio State University from 1958 to 1966. In 1961, he became a director of bureau of educational research and services at Ohio State University. Then in 1965, Guba was appointed an assistant director of School Education at that university. In 1966, he became a professor emeritus of education at Indiana University and held the position until 1989. Also in 1968, Guba was appointed an associate dean of the School of Education at Indiana University, where he worked for six years.

On June 21, 1947 Egon Guba married Elaine Vivian Thompson. They have three children. On August 7, 1980 he married Yvonna Sessions Lincoln.
