Mies van der Rohe is one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. The inventor of the modern steel-and-glass skyscraper, Mies was a found of modernism, the head of the Bauhaus, and the creator of landmarks such as the Barcelona Pavilion and the Seagram Building. His architectural style was based on aesthetic principles that reflected not only how he built, but also how he lived. In 1937 Mies came to the United States as a refugee from Nazi Germany claiming that "one does not live in the past", Mies never spoke about his last years there.

Architectural historian Elaine S. Hochman’s first book, Architects of Fortune: Mies van der Rohe and the Third Reich (1989) is based on published and unpublished sources as well as several interviews. It focuses in particular on van der Rohe’s relationship with the Third Reich. The book received mixed reviews.
Hochman’s next book, Bauhaus: Crucible of Modernism (1997), examines the contexts that produced the twentieth century’s “most influential school of art and architecture,” as noted by a Publishers Weekly critic. The reviewer called the volume a “meticulously researched, clearly written account,” praised the book for its synthesis of art history, politics, and biography and recommended it for both nonspecialists and scholars. A Library Journal commentator pointed out that the study “hardly mentions or seems moved by the legacy of art and design to which the Bauhaus gave birth,” but concluded that the book is a good complement to Frank Whitford’s Bauhaus.
Elaine Hochman is also a contributor of essays to journals, including Oppositions and Sites. In 1957-1958 she was a staff member at Metropolitan Museum of Art. Since 1969 she is a faculty member at New School for Social Research. The following year she joined the New York City Real Estate Developers as an architectural consultant. Hochman is also a founder and president of Art Ventures International, Inc. since 1985.
