Tobin began her career as a post-doctoral fellow in biology at Brandeis University in 1973. Two years later she took a position of an assistant professor of the molecular, cell and development biology department at the University of California, Los Angeles. Then in 1982, Elaine became an associate professor at the same university. Since 1986 she has been a full professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Tobin is a member of the American Society of Plant Physiology, International Society of Plant Molecular Biology and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
On April 7, 1968 Elaine Tobin married Allan J. Tobin, with whom she divorced in 1979. The marriage produced two children. On February 14, 1983 she married J. Philip Thornber.
