Unsuccessful candidate for lieutenant governor California, 1862. Moved to Nevada, 1863. Unsuccessful candidate for Nevada Supreme Court, 1864.

Returned to San Francisco, 1867. County judge San Francisco, 1868-1869. Judge 12th District Court of California, 1869-1873.

Justice California Supreme Court, 1873-1888. Professor municipal law Hasting’s College Law, San Francisco, 1888-1890. Resumed private practice law, 1890.
