Elissa Guest was born on January 10, 1953, in New York; the daughter of Peter Haden, a former ballet dancer and editor, and Jean (Hindes) Guest, a casting director.
Elissa Guest attended Hampshire College and Bank Street College. In 1975 she got a Bachelor of Arts from Antioch College. Elissa also holds a Master of Fine Arts in Children’s Literature from Hollins University.
Guest’s first published work was The Handsome Man, a young adult love story in which teenager Alexandra Barnes falls in love with a "handsome man" whom she and her friend Angela notice around their town. While Alexandra’s love is unrequited, she does get to know the man, who is a photographer. In addition to the love story, the book focuses on Alexandra and Angela’s friendship, as well as Alexandra’s family life and her relationship with her parents.
In 1986, Guest issued another young adult novel, Over the Moon. The story is narrated by Kate as she recalls events in the year her then-sixteen-year-old sister, Mattie, ran away with Dean Hartwell, a handsome twenty-eight-year-old man.
Guest followed her young adult novels with Girl Staff: A Survived Guide to Growing Up, a resource book for girls approaching puberty. Coauthored with Margaret Blackstone, this work offers information on physical, emotional, and social development for young girls.
For her next publication, Guest turned to a younger set of readers with Iris and Walter, the first of Guest’s books about Iris, a little girl who has moved from the city to the country with her parents. Once there, although she misses her life in the city terribly, Iris’s grandfather helps her make friends with a boy named Walter. Soon they are good friends, and although Iris continues to miss her old life, she also learns to enjoy living in the country.
Elissa Guest has taught writing at Pixar Animation Studios and lectured at DreamWorks. Nowadays she teaches workshops in Writing for Children & Young Adults at Stanford Continuing Studies and classes on writing picture books at the Academy of Art University.
