Elizabeth Armstrong Reed was born May 16, 1842 in Winthrop, Maine, the daughter of Alvin and Sylvia (Morrell) Armstrong.
She was educated in public schools in Maine and in Georgia, where her father taught for a while, and by private tutors. She received honorary degrees from Northwestern and Illinois Wesleyan universities and Bethany College.
Always an ardent Christian, Elizabeth Reed learned Greek and Hebrew after her marriage in order to promote her study of the Scriptures, and in 1866 published her first book, The Bible Triumphant.
Gradually she became more and more interested in the study of comparative religion and although she never learned the Oriental languages or traveled in the East, gave much time to the study of Oriental literatures in translation, and of scholarly writing in the field of Indic philology.
In 1891 she published Hindu Literature: or, the Ancient Books of India; in 1893, Persian Literature, Ancient and Modern; and in 1896, Primitive Buddhism, Its Origin and Teachings. These three books were written in a clear and thoughtful style and they won her the praise of Max Müller and of Sir Monier Monier-Williams. She was also a contributor to The Biblical Encyclopedia and The Encyclopedia Americana. She became an associate (1885) and a member (1889) of the Victoria Institute or Philosophical Society of Great Britain, one of the first women admitted to membership, and in 1897 was elected a member of the Royal Asiatic Society.
She was a leader in the Congress of Religions held in connection with the World's Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893, and was chairman of the Woman's Congress of Philology in that same year.
She was president of the Illinois Woman's Press Association for four terms. In 1899 she published a short book: Daniel Webster: A Character Sketch, containing reminiscences of Webster's personal friendship with her mother and father.
The year before her death she wrote Hinduism in Europe and America (1914), in which she violently attacked the corruptions of modern Hinduism, and especially the practices of the unscrupulous Hindu "gurus" or priests who had been making fools of many rich American and European women of the time. In this last work she became rather the Christian partisan than the scholar.
