Began to study medicine in 1860. Colleges of Surgeons and Physicians refused to admit her to their examinations. Was admitted to the examinations of the Society of Apothecaries and obtained its license to practise in 1865.
Passed the medical examinations of University of Paris and received Doctor of Medicine degree, 1870. Elected to first School Board for London, 1870. From 1866 to 1890 Senior Physician to New Hospital for Women.
Dean of the London Scholar of Medicine for Women, 1883-1903. Lecturer on Medicine ditto, 1876-1898. President of East Anglian Branch of British Medical Association, 1896-1897.
First woman elected as mayor in England. Honourable Secretary Imperial Vaccination League. M. D. (Paris); Mayor of Aldeburgh, 1908.
