Ellen graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. (magna cum laude) in 1985. Thereafter she earned a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1990.
Eisenberg worked as a research assistant with Persistent Poverty Project at the Social Science Research Council in 1988-1989. From 1990 until 1995 she worked at Willamette University, Salem, Oregon as an assistant professor, since 1995 as an associate professor of history. Between 1995 and 1996 she was a Holocaust educator at Oregon Women’s Penitentiary. She has been a contributor to periodicals, including American Jewish Archives, Communal Societies, Journal of American Ethnic History, and Rural Roots.
