Ellery Harding Clark, Jr. was an American soldier, historian, educator, and author. He was known for his series of the stories about the Boston Red Sox baseball team.
Background
Ellery Harding Clark, Jr. was born on August 6, 1909, in Cohasset, Massachusetts, United States. He was a son of Ellery Harding Clark, the first modern Olympic champion in high jump and long jump, and Victoria Mary Clark (maiden name Maddalena).
Education
Ellery Harding Clark, Jr. graduated cum laude from Harvard University as a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1933. Later, in 1950, he received a Master of Arts in History at Boston University.
Ellery Harding Clark, Jr. devoted his career to several pursuits, including the United States military, education, and the Boston Red Sox. He joined the United States Navy in 1933 as an ensign and served as damage control officer aboard the U.S.S. Randolph. In 1946 he turned to the field of education and began thirty-two years with the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, as a professor of history. In 1957 he attained the rank of captain and retired from the military in 1964. Clark continued his work with the Academy until 1978. While at the Academy, he also served as head coach for the track and cross country teams.
During his career, he also served as a member of the Secretary of the Navy’s Committee for Reorganization of the Navy. He also found time to work as a director and treasurer of the Annapolis Civic Ballet Company and served as a volunteer baseball coach in the Annapolis farm league system.
Clark’s military books include ‘The United States and Word Sea Power’, edited in collaboration with Elmer Belmont Potter, and ‘Sea Power’, edited with Potter and Chester Nimitz. Ellery Harding Clark, Jr. also wrote histories of the Boston Red Sox baseball team. He also contributed to the Boston Red Sox Scorebook for several editions in the 1980s as well as to ‘The Baseball Encyclopedia’.
Besides, Clark served as an adviser on a film about the first United States Olympic team of 1896.

The son of an Olympic athlete in high jump and long jump, Clark, Jr. participated and won many events in Senior Olympics competitions when he was in his eighties, including 2nd Massachusetts Senior Olympics, New England Masters Indoor Track & Field Championship, both in 1993, and Third Annual Senior Massachusetts Games of 1994.
