Ellis Paxson Oberholtzer was born on October 5, 1868, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. He was the first child of John Oberholtzer, a merchant, and Sara Louisa Vickers Oberholtzer, who was herself a poet and novelist.
In 1889, Oberholtzer received Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, and Ph.D., in 1893.
While working toward his doctoral degree, Oberholtzer also worked on the Philadelphia Evening Telegraph, a local paper. By the time he had completed his thesis, The Referendum in America (1893), Oberholtzer was not only an accomplished scholar, but also a talented reporter. The dissertation focused on how the referendum form of democracy had been built into the political system; it was well-received although reviewers noted Oberholtzer’s tendency to eschew open avowals of argument.
After an eighteen-month sojourn in Germany (during which time he wrote a study of German journalism entitled Die Beziehungen zwischen dem Staat und der Zeitungspresse im Deutschen Reich, published in 1895), Oberholtzer became an editor. He first worked at the Philadelphia Manufacturer, then at the Philadelphia Times and the Public Ledger, where he presided as literary editor. During this period, Oberholtzer also edited histories of Philadelphia, such as University of Pennsylvania: Its History, Influence, Equipment and Characteristics (1901-02). Oberholtzer also wrote two biographies: Robert Morris: Patriot and Financier (1903) and Abraham Lincoln (1904). Though, as L. Moody Simms Jr. notes in his article for the Dictionary of Literary Biography, “Abraham Lincoln" was quickly buried in the ever-growing body of Lincoln literature,” the biography did have its share of admirers.
