Elwood Haynes was born on October 14, 1857, in Portland, Indiana.
After graduating from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, he studied at Johns Hopkins University, taught science in Portland, Indiana, and was manager of the Portland Natural Gas and Oil Company.
During the years 1893 and 1894 Haynes designed and constructed a "horseless carriage" at Kokomo, Ind. ; this first automobile is on exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D. C.
In 1903 Haynes invented and constructed the rotary valve gas engine. He was also a pioneer in the development of special chromium steels containing tungsten, nickel, cobalt, cobalt-tungsten, and cobalt-molybdenum. In 1910 he discovered the alloy Stellite, containing cobalt, chromium, and tungsten, suitable for high-speed cutting tools.
