V... téraire de notre temps, se sont - ils placés tout d'un coup à côté d'eux. C'est encore en ne leur res semblant pas. Les Études de la nature, Paul et Virginie, le Génie du Christianisme, René, 1 ti ne'raire sont des productions qui n'avaient pas leur germe dans notre langue; et aujourd'hui même, parmi les écrivains exclusivement voués à la prose, quels sont les plus remarquables par la pensée et par l'expression si ce n'est ceux qui se livrent àla haute étude des sciences phi losophiques ou aux profondes recherches histo riques deux importantes matières que nos grands prosateurs des derniers siècles étaient loin d'a voir épuisées et dans lesquelles les littératures étrangères nous ont devancés et surpassés. Les historiens et les philosophes de la génération nouvelle sont entourés de trop d'estime et de cê lébrité pour qu'il soit besoin de les louer et même de les nommer. Excerpt from Poesies Ma préface des Etudes françaises et étrangères qui soulevait, en 1828, ces questions et beaucoup d'autres, souleva en même temps une vive polemi que. Tout cela s'est apaisé; le champ de bataille étant resté aux écrivains dits de la nouvelle école. Il y aurait donc peu d'utilité à reproduire cette pré face après les différentes éditions de mes Etudes. Cependant, je regrette que l'espace manque ici pour ce trop long manifeste le suffrage de l'illustre Goëthe, douce compensation de tant de critiques, m'ayant fait un devoir sacré d'en répandre, en toute circonstance, les principes et les applications. Et que de beaux talents poétiques se sont élevés depuis que je rendis hommage à nos grands poètes de l'époque! Il faut du courage pour lancer huit mille vers au milieu de toutes ces belles et fortes poésies. Mais, une fois sur la pente littéraire, on ne s'arrête pas on écrit ce que l'on éprouve; on pu blie ce que l'on écrit; et il arrive ce qui peut de ce qu'on publie. Émile Deschamps was born at Bourges on the 20th of February 1791. He was the son of a civil servant.
Deschamps adopted his father’s career, but as early as 1812 he distinguished himself by an ode, La Paix conquise, which won the praise of Napoleon. In 1818 he collaborated with Henri de Latouche in two verse comedies, Selmours de Florian and Le Tour de faveur.
He and his brother were among the most enthusiastic disciples of the cénacle gathered round Victor Hugo, and in July 1823 Émile founded with his master the Muse française, which during the year of its existence was the special organ of the romantic party. His Études françaises et étrangères (1828) were preceded by a preface which may be regarded as one of the manifestos of the romanticists. The versions of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet (1839) and of Macbeth (1844), important as they were in the history of the romantic movement, were never staged.
The list of Deschamps's most important works was compiled into two volumes of stories, Contes physiologiques (1854) and Réalités fantastiques (1854).
His Œuvres complètes were published in 1872-1874 (6 vols. ).
