Wamala, Emmanuel Cardinal was born on December 15, 1926 in Kammagwa, Uganda.
Attended, National Major Seminary, Katigondo, Uganda, 1949—1955. Licentiate in Theology, Pontifical Urbanian University, Rome, 1957. Licentiate in Social Sciences, Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome, 1960.
Degree in Pedagogy, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, 1964.
He was created a -Priest of South. Ugo in 1994. He served as archbishop of Kampala until he resigned on 30 September 2006. He was ordained, on 21 December 1957, chapel of the Pontifical Collegio Urbaniano, Rome, by Pietro Sigismondi.
In the same ceremony was also ordained Stephen Fumio Hamao, future cardinal.
Further studies, Rome, 1957–1960. From 1960 to 1981, further studies in Uganda and United States as well as pastoral ministry in diocese of Masaka.
He served as vicar general of diocese of Masaka from 1974–1981. He was created Chaplain of His Holiness on 25 May 1977.
He was one of the cardinal electors who participated in the 2005 papal conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI, but has lost the right to participate in any future conclave as a result of passing his eightieth birthday.
He has been succeeded in Kampala by Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga, who is himself likely to be named a in the next consistory given that his predecessors as Archbishop were.
During this time he also served as inspector of diocesan schools and faculty member of the Minor Seminary of Bukalasa. Chaplain and faculty member and rector of University of Makerere.
