French He was formerly a priest at Saint John Fisher parish in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. Johns graduated with a Bachelor from Loyola College in 1974. In 1997, he received an honorary doctorate from Concordia University.
Founded in December 1988, Dans la rue is a community-based charitable organization that works with street kids and youths at risk in the Montreal area.
Dans la rue also runs a number of prevention programs designed to educate young people about the risks and consequences associated with living in the streets. Dans la rue has a team of more than 65 full-time employees and 135 volunteers.
In 2003, he was made a Grand Officer of the National Order of Quebec. In 1999, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. Father Emmett Johns is the founder of an organization called DANS Los Angeles RUE. Based on the "help without judgement" philosophy of founder Father Emmett "Pops" Johns, the organization offers food, shelter and friendship to homeless youths, as well as the resources and services required to help them get off the street.
