mathematician master of abacus calculation
Endo Toshisada was born in 1943 in Japan.
A retainer of the Kuwana Clan (Mie Prefecture), Endo Toshisada was a native of Yedo. He studied abacus calculation of the Seki School. After the Meiji Restoration, he taught Western arithmetic at the Tokyo Municipal Normal School and Middle School.
Regretting that the art of abacus calculation was falling into disuse, Toshisada compiled a history of abacus calculation. In 1896 Endo Toshisada published the first critically written history of wasan: Dai-Nippon Sugakushi (A History of Mathematics in Great Japan). He collected data concerning wasan (Japanese calculation) for 44 years, under the supervision of Dairoku Kikuchi of Tokyo University.
