Enrique González Martínez was born on April 13, 1871 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico to the family of José María González and Feliciana Martínez.
Martínez studied at Liceo de Varones (Men's Grammar School) of the State of Jalisco.
Martínez entered preparatory school Seminario Conciliar at the age of 10.
In 1893 Martínez received his doctorate degree in Medicine from the University de Guadalajara.

Enrique González Martínez was born on April 13, 1871 in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico to the family of José María González and Feliciana Martínez.
Martínez received his early education at home. At the age of 10, he entered Seminario Conciliar preparatory school and later the Liceo de Varones (Men's Grammar School) of the State of Jalisco. In 1893 Martínez received his doctorate degree in Medicine from the University de Guadalajara.
González Martínez began writing while practicing medicine in the provinces. With the coming of the Mexican Revolution 1911, he entered public life, serving in the Ministry of Education and holding diplomatic posts in Europe and various Latin American countries. In 1911 González Martínez moved to Mexico City, where he became one of a group of professional men, artists, and writers called the Ateneo de México, Mexico, which was of extraordinary importance in the cultural flowering of Mexico in the 20th century.
In 1924 González Martínez was named minister to Spain, an office he held until 1936. He then returned to Mexico City, where he dedicated himself to writing until his death in 1952.
Enrique González Martínez was married to Luisa Rojo. They had three children: Héctor, Enrique and Maria Luisa.
