Eric Johnson earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Oregon Honors College (now The Robert D. Clark Honors College), Eugene, in 1971. He earned a Master of Arts (1975) and Master of Fine Arts (1978) in Photography from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque.
In 1979 Eric Johnson was a visiting assistant professor in the Department of Photography and Cinema at Ohio State University, Columbus. He taught photography at Western Washington University, Bellingham, in 1978-1979 and was a graduate teaching fellow at the University of New Mexico from 1975 to 1977.
The series of photograms made by Johnson on printing-out paper, "Templates,'' used architectural engineering templates as negatives combined with ordinary photographic negatives.
