Graduated from the Faculty of Law of the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University in 1958. Diploma work in forensic science: "Leaving traces by a criminal when shooting from self-made or intentionally spoiled weapons."
Worked as editor in publishing houses of Moscow. Since 1966, he was engaged in scientific work at the Institute of International Labor Movement of the USSR Academy of Sciences, the All-Union Scientific Research Institute of Soviet State Construction and Legislation. Expert of the Constitutional Commission of the Russian Federation, judge of the Constitutional Court of the Russian Federation (since 1991). Participant of the Constitutional Meeting on drafting the Constitution of the Russian Federation (1993). One of the founders of the historical and educational society "Memorial", a member of the Moscow-Helsinki Group.
He is the author of more than 140 scientific works, including 8 monographs and reviews on international law, the activities of international organizations, the protection of human rights, the legal regulation of foreign economic relations, as well as many journalistic articles devoted to topical problems of politics and law.
In February 1999, the Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights named after E.M. Ametistova (theory and practice) ", engaged in the dissemination of knowledge in the field of human rights protection was establshed in Moscow.
