Ildar Ganievich Akmaev was born on 3 August 1930 in Moscow.
After finishing school, Ildar Ganievich Akmaev entered Moscow Medical University named after I.V. Stalin (later named after N.I. Pirogov) at the Faculty of Medicine, which he graduated from with excellence in 1955. He successfully defended his PhD thesis in 1959.
Ildar Ganievich Akmaev carried out his further research under the guidance of AMS USSR academician D.A. Jdanov in the laboratory of the Institute of Human Morphology of AMS USSR (director – AMS USSR academician A.P. Avtsin) and, in a further, on his own, being a supervisor of the laboratory in the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology and Hormonal Chemistry of AMS USSR (director – AMS USSR academician N.A. Judaev). After the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology and Hormonal Chemistry of AMS USSR had been transformed into the Science Center for Endocrinology (ESC) of RAMS (director – RAS and RAMS academician I.I. Dedov), which was composed of a number of institutions, I.G. Akmaev was a director of one of them – the Institute of Experimental Endocrinology of ESC of RAMS for 10 years.
Ildar Ganievich is a bureau member of the Association of Endocrinological Societies, Russian Medical Society of Anatomists, Histologists and Embryologists, International Association of Morphologists, Honorable member of the International Federation of Neuroendocrinologists.
In 1988 Ildar Ganievich was elected as a corresponding member of AMS USSR, and in 1994 as a RAMS academician and deputy assistant of a Secretary of the Medical-Biological section of RAMS. In 1995 he was elected as a full member of the New York Academy of Sciences.
