BIRCH, Ernest Woodford was born on April 29, 1857. Son of J. W. W. Birch, Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements and British Resident of Perak, who was assassinated by the Malays in November 1875.

Studied at Elstree School.
Served in Colonial Office, 1876-1878. Cadet in the Service of the Straits Settlements, 1878. Served in various capacities in Singapore and Malacca till 1892.
Secretary to Government Perak, 1892. Has acted as British Resident of Perak and Selangor. British Resident of the Negri Sembitan, 1897-1900.
Employed on a special mission in H. Master of Surgery “Espoir” to the Cocos Keeling Islands, 1885. Governor and Commander - in - Chief, Labuan and North Borneo, 1900-1904. Decorated for Colonial Service. British Resident, Perak, Federated Malay States, since 1904.
