He was educated in local schools and later graduated at Duff's College in the city. He also attended the Western College of Pennsylvania (now the University of Pittsburgh), and acquired a basic training in architecture in the office of Drum & Kuhn.
During 1881 he was employed as draftsman by James T. Steen, and in the followir year joined Charles M. Barthberger in organizing the firm of Barthberger & Dietrich. After maintaining the partnership for several years, Mr. Dietrich withdrew in 1889 to open an office in New York City. His early work there was largely residential, but in later practice he was commissioned to plan both public and commercial buildings.
Elected to the A.I.A. in 1921, he served at one time as Treasurer of the Brooklyn Chapter, and was also a member of the Fine Arts Federation.
