Studied at Moscow University (Philosophy-Marxism). Studied at Moscow University (Philosophy-Marxism). Graduated from the Surikov Art Institute, Moscow.
Wounded during World War II. Became a fashionably famous sculptor. Came into conflict with Khrushchev during the latter’s visit to his exhibition in the Manezh Hall in 1962.
Expelled from the Union of Artists. Despite this, managed to retain his reputation and was showered with private and official orders. At the centre of
Moscow artistic life until his final departure from the USSR in 1976.
His last commission was from Khrushchev’s family for a memorial on Khrushchev’s grave in Novodevich’e Cemetery. Settled in Switzerland, later moved to the USA. Active in Russian artistic life in exile.
