He taught at the University of Michigan from 1968 to 2002. Young earned a Doctor of Philosophy. in History and Far Eastern Languages at Harvard University in 1965. Young worked at the Embassy of Japan for the Ambassador, and at Dartmouth College before his professorship at the University of Michigan.
During the Vietnam War, his venture to Japan to interview a group of young anti-war deserters known as "The Intrepid Four" made headlines.
He later remarried M. Brady Mikusko, a life coach and mediator.
