1st commissioner for Wei-haiWei, and administrator of Liu-kung-tao, 1898-1899. Commissioner and superintending transport oflicer at Wei-hai-Wei (despatches). Received the thanks of the Austrian and German Commanders-in-Chief for his services during the Boxer outbreak.
Commanded landing party of H. Master of Surgery “Mohawk,” avenging death of Lieutenant Grabau, Italian Navy, at Durbo, Somaliland, 0 December 1903 (severely wounded. Received thanks of Italian Chamber of Deputies and Italian military medal for valour. Granted permission to wear the latter.
Promoted to captain. Royal Navy; Captain of the Cambrian.
