Editorial Reviews: "Looming in the background are a father who literally blew his mind and a mother who drank herself to a horrible death. The writing's exuberance becomes the measure of Hartspring's own distance from suicide. Smallness and largeness are yoked together into an exuberant poignance." Yale Review, 1968 "A marvelously funny book, joyously raunchy, infused with the spirit of wild bawdry that we associate with Rabelais. For along with the ribaldry, we are confronted with anecdotes of death and malignancy, reminding us of our mortality and of the transitory nature of all flesh--blond, brunet, or redhead." National Observer, 1968

"The plot mechanism of Ernest Lockridge's Grand Guignol comedy operates like a centrifuge. Into it the author stuffs a cast of wildly crummy characters, plenty of garbage, an assortment of excretions and some criminal intentions. After much violent and inscrutable agitation, a few people and situations finally surface from the whole stinking (and funny) mess. Mrs. Amelia Biggs is a mother of four by two husbands and one rapist. Her mother of record, Ethel Dollarhide, is a self-admitted 'criminal genius.' About her father Casey, the less said the better. Amelia herself is a human catalyst who has a way of leading people into accidents. Directly and indirectly she is the agent of at least five violent deaths. Would you believe that out of all this comes a happy ending? There is one--although by the time it arrives the reader is almost too dizzy to appreciate it. Ernest Lockridge's middle-American grotesques might be seen to better advantage if they would only hold still for a bit." The New York Times Book Review, Sunday, September 21, 1975 "'ELBOWS' EXQUISITE MADNESS This incredibly insane novel is also exquisitely funny--so there must be method to author Ernest Lockridge's madness. Yet the book seems artless, so skillfully is to crafted. All is told in the words of heroine Amelia Biggs, a much-married, sexy woman whose Indiana momma taiught her how to steal, lie, blackmail and pass counterfeit money. It comes in handy as Amelia, 34, tries to support three daughters while their two fathers are in prison and a hippy commune respectively. Godzilla (a jalopy), the Red Devil (a meat-eating fish), the Cat Burglar (a petty thief and a worse poet), Billy Graham (a drunken divine) and Wilson (an honest cop) are denizens of Amelia's world . . . . Her sassisest daughter runs off with a sadistic Vietnam vet, Granny arrives with stolen property, Amelia's first husband skips jail, her second gets clap, and Amelia (somehow) gets pregnant again The picaresque plot burns with Lockridge's brilliant language and break-neck pacing. Crazy scenes as real as newspaper stories tumble together so fast that the book seems life distilled into laughter. Like Huck Finn, Amelia speaks a unique tongue and has a fine eye for hypocrisy. And like Mark Twain, if not Huck, Amelia talks dirty superbly. Since this is a family newspaper, we will not quote, but recommend you read Flying Elbows for yourself."
