After leaving school, Ernst Hartmann studied medicine in Mannheim and Jena.

"Hartmann lines" are named after him. During World World War II he worked as a staff physician and was in American captivity. After his return from captivity, he opened a medical practice in Eberbach on the river Neckar, where he stayed more than 40 years as a practitioner.
Furthermore, he occupied himself with homeopathy and later also biology.
The Research Group for Geobiology (Doctor Hartmann eV), a registered association, was founded by him.
