Eugene Fama was born on February 14, 1939, in Boston, Massachusetts. He is a son of Angelina and Francis Fama. His grandparents were immigrants from Italy.
Eugene Fama studied at Malden Catholic High School. In 1956, he entered Tufts University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960. Then he studied at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He received a Master of Business Administration degree in 1963 and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1964.
In 1962, Eugene Fama took up a position of an assistant professor at the University of Chicago. Later he became an associate professor. In 1968, Fama started to work as a professor of finance and in 1973 he became Robert R. McCormick Distinguished Service Professor of Finance. Fama also worked as a visiting professor at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Anderson School of Management.
Eugene Fama published his financial studies in newspapers and magazines. He is considered the father of the efficient-market hypothesis. In 1972, he published his first book The Theory of Finance. He is also the author of Foundations of Finance.
Eugene Fama is known as an American economist, writer, and educator, who is famous for his work on portfolio theory and the efficient-market hypothesis. He wrote such books as The Theory of Finance and Foundations of Finance.
He won Deutsche Bank Prize in Financial Economics in 2005 and also received the Morgan Stanley-American Finance Association Award in 2008. In 2013, he won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences. He was ranked as the 9th-most influential economist of all-time
Eugene Fama married Sallyann Dimeco. The marriage produced four children.
