Graduated from the Leningrad Conservatory, 1931. Pupil of A. Gauk and N. Mal’ko.
From 1921, conductor at the Leningrad Choreographic School. While still a student, was in charge of the School’s musical department. Conductor at the Kirov Theatre, 1932-1938.
Conductor, later chief conductor with the Leningrad Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra from 1938 until his death, (turning it into one of the world’s great orchestras). Illness during his last years limited his appearances with the orchestra. Made several trips to London, where he performed at the Festival Hall.
His last appearance with the orchestra in Britain was at the 1961 Edinburgh Festival. State Prize of the USSR. 1946. Lenin Prize, 1961. Professorship, 1963.
