Graduated from the Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies in 1953.
Worked for the State Radio and Television Committee, 1953-1962. Joined the Communist Party in 1959. Reporter and editor at the Asian and African Desk of Pravda, 1962-1970.
From 1970, deputy director of the Institute of World Economy and International Relations in Moscow. In 1974, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Authority on Arab countries.
From 1972, member of the editorial staff of Mezhdunarodnye Konflikty, and from 1975, of Energeticheskii Krizis v Kapitalisticheskom Mire. Director of the Institute from 1985. Senior foreign policy adviser of Gorbachev (Arab and Asian countries).
His theory that the export of world revolution has become outdated and too costly to the Soviet economy and people, and that one should end excessive military expenditure in order to concentrate on reducing the wide economic gap with the USA, was accepted by Gorbachev’s government.
