F. Todd Smith was a graduate of University of Missouri—Columbia, from which he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1979. In 1983 he finished his studies at University of South Dakota with Master of Arts. He also graduated from Tulane University in 1989, obtaining Doctor of Philosophy.
From 1987 till 1988 Mr. Smith worked at Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans, instructor in history. He joined the staff of Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, serving as a historian at Museum of Geoscience between 1988 and 1989. In 1990-1991 Mr. Smith was an instructor in history Austin Community College, Austin, TX.
F. Todd Smith held the post of an assistant professor of history at Xavier University of New Orleans during 1991-1996. In 1996 he was appointed assistant professor of history at University of West Florida, Pensacola. In 1988 Mr. Smith becamw an instructor at University of Oklahoma.
He was a contributor of articles and reviews to history journals, including Southwestern Historical Quarterly, Louisiana History, New Mexico Historical Review, Great Plains Journal, American Historical Review, and Journal of the Early Republic as well as several books.
F. Todd Smith got married to H. Sophie Burton on May 22, 1994.
