Malekian was born on July 23, 1953 in Zanjan, Iran; the son of Mohammed Taghi Malekian and Ghamartadj (Saeidi) Malekian.
Malekian graduated from Teheran University in 1978. Six years later he earned a diploma in international law from the University of Stockholm.
Malekian began his career as a researcher in international law at Uppsala University in 1979. Four years later he took the same position at Stockholm University, where he worked until 1985. Since 1994 Farhad has been a director at the Institute of International Criminal Law.
Malekian, in 2005, introduced for the first time the Principle of International Tribunality of Jurisdiction in international criminal law at the Cornell Law School, embodied in his article on "Emasculating the Philosophy of International Criminal Justice in the Iraqi Special Tribunal". Also he established the Institute of International Criminal Law in Uppsala.

1994Malekian is a member of the Association International de Droit Penal and American Society of International Law.
On April 11, 1990 Farhad Malekian married Kerstin Ingrid Eleonor Nordlöf. They have four children.
