Educated in Germany at Hamburg, Wiesbaden, Leipzig Conservatory, 1894-1899 (specializing in piano). Pupil of Karl Reinecke, Salomon Jadassohn, Karl Panzner.
At the conclusion of his musical education at the Leipzig Conservatory, Senior Gerdes was offered and accepted the post of kapellmeister of the Düsseldorf theater. Several years later, retiring from the theater, he undertook a successful concert tour through Russia, and upon his return to Berlin, devoted himself to the teaching of piano, his favorite instrument, and to the accompaniment of !.„„„rs violinists, and cellists in concerts which "found wide repercussions in the musical circles of the German capital.
Vi 1906 he became sub-director of the ri"iin School of Voice (connected with the Imperial Opera), and during his tenure of office, among other duties, directed the choirs of seven Wagnerian operas for an engagement at Covent Garden, London The success of his work was outstanding, and it won for him the appointment of choir director and musical assistant of the Wagner Festivals (presented during July and August of 1908).
In 1908 he was called to Perú by President José Pardo to organize the National Academy of Music (which he still directs). At the present time Senior
Gerdes is also director of the Philharmonic Society of Lima. This eminent Peruvian pianist and conductor has probably done more to spread the culture of music in his country than any other individual.
