Educated in Germany at Hamburg, Wiesbaden, Leipzig Conservatory, 1894-1899 (specializing in piano). Pupil of Karl Reinecke, Salomon Jadassohn, Karl Panzner.
Director of orchestras in municipal theaters of Dusseldorf and Stettin, 1898-1901. Made a concert tour through Russia, 1901. On returning to Berlin, devoted himself to teaching piano, and accompanying singers, violinists and cellists in concerts.
Director, Schola Cantorum, Berlin (attached to the Imperial Opera), 1906-1908. During this time, he directed the chorus of seven Wagnerian operas for an engagement at Covcnt Garden, London, under the direction of Arthur Nikisch. Musical assistant, and sub-director of chorus, Wagner Festivals, Bayreuth, 1908.
In 1908 was called to Peru by President José Pardo to direct the Society Filarmónica, which post he still holds. Founder and director, Academy Nacional de Música. 1908-1944; although Sr.
Gerdes has been often referred to as a composer, he prefers to be known as a conductor. Member Club Nacional.
