Fedor: The Fighting System of the World's Undisputed King of MMA
(The undefeated, undisputed heavyweight MMA champion of th...)
The undefeated, undisputed heavyweight MMA champion of the world unveils his trademark striking and grappling techniques through descriptive narrative and more than 2500 step-by-step color photographs.
Fedor Emelianenko is a Russian sportsman best known as a heavyweight mixed martial artist. He is also the Honored Master of Sports in sambo and judo. To date, Emelianenko is associated with Rizin Fighting Federation and Bellator MMA.
Background
Fedor Emelianenko, in full Fedor Vladimirovich Emelianenko, was born on September 28, 1976, in Rubizhne, Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine (former Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union). He is a son of Vladimir Alexandrovich Emelianenko, a gas electric welder, and Olga Fedorovna, a teacher. Fedor has an elder sister Marina, and two younger brothers, Alexander and Ivan, both mixed martial artists.
Education
Fedor Emelianenko's family relocated to Stary Oskol, Belgorod Oblast, Russian Federation (Russian SFSR at the time) when he was two years old. The Emelianenko family took up residence in a small communal flat.
Fedor got involved in sambo and judo in 1986. First trained by Vasily Ivanovich Gavrilov, he became a ward of a coach Vladimir Voronov by 1988. Emelianenko trained hard during his school years and kept training throughout his further education, including the vocational school where he earned a diploma of an electrician with honors in 1994.
From 2003 to 2009, he studied at the Belgorod State University, the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports. After graduation, Fedor Emelianenko followed a postgraduate course at the university.
The start of Fedor Emelianenko's career can be counted from his military service in the middle 1990s. He joined the Russian Army as a Military Firefighter in 1995 and then was a member of the Tank Division not far from Nizhny Novgorod. He was discharged in 1997.
That same year, Emelianenko attained the title of Master of Sports of Russia which was followed by the International Class Master of Sports of Russia in 1998. A year later, after a series of victories at the national and international sambo and judo tournaments, Fedor Emelianenko joined the Russian National Sambo Team. Insufficient funds within the team and disagreement on several points with its administration pushed Emelianenko to turn his attention to mixed martial arts.
He began to learn boxing techniques and joined the Russian Top Team club, a part of Fighting Network Rings, simply known as RINGS, in 2000. A Russian professional wrestler Volk Han and a Russian sambist and mixed martial artist Andrei Kopylov were among his coaches. During the three years that he spent in the RINGS's Top Team, Emelianenko led 11 fights, including those with Ricardo Arona and Renato Sobral, and was twice a heavyweight champion.
On March 16, 2003, Fedor Emelianenko earned the title of a Heavyweight Champion at the Pride Fighting Championships, one of the greatest MMA tournaments at the time, by holding a victory against Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira. He confirmed the title during three further years. After leaving the Russian Top Team club in 2003, Emelianenko joined Vadim Finkelchtein's Red Devil Sport Club (later renamed after Alexander Nevsky), St. Petersburg, where he worked for the most part of his professional career in MMA. Since 2007, Emelianenko has been a minor shareholder of the mixed martial arts promotion M-1 Global, established in St. Petersburg by Finkelchtein in 1997.
Emelianenko held his title of an absolute champion in MMA for ten years since the beginning of his career in the field. During this period, he won 11 top-10 ranking fighters. Such winning streak of the sportsman was interrupted on June 26, 2010 when he was defeated by Fabrício Werdum. Although Emelianenko continued to compete quite successfully in Russia and Japan, his world ratings in the list of the best heavyweight mixed martial artists went down considerably. Emelianenko announced his first retirement from the sport on June 21, 2012, after the win over three-time UFC heavyweight title contender Pedro Rizzo in St. Petersburg, Russia, in an M-1 Global tournament.
Emelianenko used the pause from the martial arts to try himself in politics. Shortly before the decision to quit the sport, on October 10, 2010, he was elected to a five-year term as a deputy of the Belgorod Regional Duma from United Russia political Party. Two years later after retirement from sport, on July 28, he was assigned a staff member of the Council of Physical Fitness & Sports of Russia, by a decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Emelianenko succeeded Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in that post. The year 2012 was rich in various appointments. Emelianenko was assigned the President of the Russian MMA Union in May and became adviser to the Minister of Sport in November, after stepping down as Duma deputy.
Fedor Emelianenko proclaimed his desire to come back to the ring on July 14, 2015. He resigned from the Ministry of Sport and resumed his trainings. On December 31 of that same year, he defeated Indian-Japanese mixed-martial artist and kick-boxer Jaideep Singh at the Rizin World Grand Prix Finale Active competition. In 2016, Emelianenko was reelected as the President of the Russian MMA Union.
On November 19, 2016 Emelianenko entered into a multi-fight contract with Bellator MMA. The deal was renegotiated on December 29 three years later. The sportsman has also competed for Japanese Rizin Fighting Federation.
An outstanding figure in combat fighting, Fedor Emelianenko has appeared on the screen as well, starring in the Russian movie The 5th Execution and as cameo in a documentary New York Mixed Martial Arts. He has also taken part in a number of TV shows and adverts.
Fedor Emelianenko is rightly recognized as one of the greatest mixed martial artists of all time. He has led in total 45 fights, 39 of which were victorious, including 15 knockouts, 15 submissions, and 9 decisions. A master of ground-and-pound technique, Emelianenko is the longest-reigning Heavyweight lineal record holder.
Emelianenko is a multiple world champion in mixed martial arts, including four wins in heavyweight according to Pride FC, two wins according to RINGS, and two wins according to WAMMA. He is a four-time world champion and a nine-time Russian champion in combat sambo. The victories over seven UFC champions, one Pride FC champion, one former and two future K-1 champions, and two Olympic medalists are to his credit.
Emelianenko's accomplishments brought him several state awards, and he has been considered the all time greatest MMA Heavyweight fighter by many periodicals and other media, including Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Fight Matrix and Sherdog, to name but a few. His impact on MMA has been compared to the legacy of Muhammad Ali, Pelé, Wayne Gretzky in their sports.
In 2008, Emelianenko was among the 80 eminent Russian figures who carried the Olympic torch in St. Petersburg. A year later, a documentary biography of the sportsman was released, Fedor: The Baddest Man on the Plane. Emelianenko's personality was used as playable characters in a couple of sports video games.

Politics
Fedor Emelianenko has been a member of United Russia political party since September 3, 2007.
The sportsman was among the proponents of the annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation stating at the 2014 Crimean status referendum that "Crimea has made the right choice." He visited the region to promote mixed martial arts there. Emelianenko criticized Ukraine for the Donbass war and blamed the country's government for "murdering Russians simply for being Russian."
